As The Donald is officially the 45th incumbent, here’s a reminder of his campaigning rhetoric and promises now that he has been elected as president of the United States.
BUILDING A WALL ON THE US-MEXICO BORDER
Trump, since the early days of his campaign, has promised to build a wall along the border between the United States and Mexico.
Details of exactly how this might be accomplished have not been provided and many people have questioned the feasibility of a wall covering thousands of kilometres of varied terrain.
He reaffirmed the plan in September.
BAN MUSLIMS FROM ENTERING THE US
The Republican victor sparked a backlash, not only from Muslims, but from within his own party, after calling for a “total and complete shutdown” of Muslims entering the United States.
His proposed ban would apply to immigrants and visitors alike, a sweeping prohibition affecting all adherents of a religion practiced by more than a billion people worldwide.
“Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” he said.
President Obama angrily denounced Trump’s rhetoric.
BAN MEXICANS FROM ENTERING THE US
Notwithstanding a giant wall stretching for thousands of kilometres, Trump also launched his campaign with a promise to be tough on illegal immigration – and immigrants.
He called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and “criminals.”
He would later promise to deport every single one of them – even approvingly referring to a controversial 1950s mass-deportation program known as “Operation Wetback”.
SEND HILLARY CLINTON TO JAIL
He threatened to jail Clinton for the use of her private email server, use the FBI subsequently investigated – twice – and then found there were no grounds for prosecution.
During a second presidential debate, Trump made the threat after Clinton said it was “good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country.”
Trump shot back: “Because you’d be in jail.”
His campaign manager later said it was “a quip”.
SCRAP INTERNATIONAL TRADE DEALS
Trump has been critical of trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and he’s raised the possibility of slapping tariffs on China and Mexico.
DO NOTHING TO ABORTION LAWS
A hugely controversial and divisive issue in the US.
Trump has changed his stance on abortion. First, he said there should be “some form of punishment” for women who get abortions in places where the procedure is outlawed. He then backed off under heavy criticism.
Then, he said if the laws were set they should not be changed.
GET RID OF OBAMACARE
Trump has said he wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with an alternative system preferred by rank and file members of the GOP.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AGAIN
It’s unclear what he means, but here’s Trump in his own words:
“If I become president, we’re all going to be saying ‘Merry Christmas’ again.”
Limit the Fourth Estate
He’s made no secret of what he thinks of some media, and has promised to open up the libel laws.
