Rocky Dawuni’s Branches of the Same Tree, recently got a Grammy nomination for Reggae Album of the Year.
The Ghanaian-born reggae star would have been the 8th African to receive the award. With artistes like Sarkodie consistently proclaiming desires to win the Grammys, it becomes relevant to consider who the next Ghanaian artiste to get nominated for a Grammy will be.
Sarkodie has arguably been the biggest artiste in Ghana for a few years now and his Grammy aspiration is becoming more obvious with his English rap verses. However, if there is any artiste in Ghana who is likely to get a Grammy nomination, that artiste is Stonebwoy.
Although Sarkodie has been in the spotlight longer than Stonebwoy, Stonebwoy seems to be gathering more International recognition than Sarkodie.
With invitations from a concert like STING and a world renowned band like Morgan Heritage just last year alone, as against Sarkodie’s controversial collaboration with Ace Hood, Stonebwoy seems better positioned to grasp a Grammy nomination ahead of the rapper he has referred to as his mentor.
Another important factor to consider is their genre of music. Reggae and Dancehall are universal sounds and with similarities between the two genres that get them put together a lot, it is not difficult for an artiste like Stonebwoy to get a Grammy nomination by tweaking his style.
Even though Sarkodie does what is referred to as hip hop, most of his biggest songs are in Twi.
And even with his English rap verses, which we must admit aren’t as strong as his Twi ones, he’d have to compete with the biggest names in hip hop from the United States of America. So a nomination for Sarkodie isn’t totally impossible but there are definitely difficulties.
Additionally, the trend for African Grammy nominations have been in favor of singers and if history is anything to go by, Stonebwoy who is a very good vocalist gets a higher chance of nomination.
None of these points indicate that Sarkodie will not achieve his goal of Grammy nomination. There is still a possibility considering the rapper’s hard work. But for the sake of comparison and likelihood, it is obvious that Stonebwoy stands a greater chance at least in the medium term.
